<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Hello from Winnipeg, Mom and I are doing well. We have been
enjoying the late summer early fall weather and still try to walk most days in
Assiniboine Park enjoying the sun and lingering flowers. We know that winter is
on the way and I know it will be cold. I’m not sure we are looking forward to
it. When I was a kid I dreamed of living someplace where it snowed all winter
and I could play in it, camp in it, etc. I guess I read too many Hardy Boy
Books. So now at 64 here I am. I did tell Mom I was thinking about getting a
tube so I can slide down the man made hill by the church at least once before
we leave. She said to “knock myself out”.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">There are a few things to report that are leftover from
August so here they are. Our previous Mission President got a photo cop
speeding ticket the last day he was here. He left Canada for Utah and was not
aware of the infraction since photo cop tickets are mailed to the mission
office and take about one week to come in the mail. I had the privilege of
calling him and telling him he owed the city of Winnipeg $305.00. Needless to
say he was not thrilled with the news. He wrote a letter explaining he thought
the photo radar was inaccurate and that he was in the U.S.A. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and would never be back in Canada again. He
hoped they would consider his three years of voluntary service at his own
expense in lieu of the ticket. He asked for a dismissal of the charges or a
reduction in the dollar amount. The city ignored his request and sent the
entire package to me since the church owns the car which is licensed in
Winnipeg. The next step was for me to represent the President at traffic court.
It’s a good thing I have watched so many Perry Mason episodes. I considered
myself a polished defense advocate. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>So
with Mom as my Della Street off we went to traffic court. I first had to appear
at a barred window and talk with an in-house Justice of The Peace in order to plead
guilty before having an audience with a judge which in Canada is called Your
Worship. So I plead guilty (once you have plead guilty you can no longer have a
jury trial) and then we were off to see Your Worship. I was directed to a
cubical that had a lectern to stand behind and Your Worship sat behind a
traditional elevated stand like in a regular court room. She reviewed the
traffic infraction, asked me a number of questions, scolded me slightly and
reduced the fine to $150.00 which we paid. It was a bit stressful but it worked
out well enough and The President was reasonably pleased with the outcome. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mom and I went several times to a farmers market to buy
locally grown produce. Since we used to grow our own it seemed strange to buy
corn, beets, zucchini etc. It wasn’t a huge market but it had what we needed. I
really enjoyed the corn. The Mennonite lady’s sold home baked pies but I was
able to resist, especially at $9.00 per pie. Both times we went a Hispanic man
was there playing his saxophone for donations. He was pretty good and sang
“Oldies “as well.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The missionaries from our ward tracked into a unique family.
There is a Mum, two adult daughters, as well as a teenage girl and a friend
named Jim. They are eager to learn but have a limited knowledge of spiritual
matters. Couple that with their addictions and they struggle mightily to be
ready to come to church or even to stay for all the meetings. They have good
hearts and we hope that some of them may be able to overcome the addictive habits
which plague them. We feel blessed to have avoided all those choices that put
people in misery. Jim seems the most likely to succeed. He is bright and free
from the problems that affect the others in the household. He is a retired
school teacher and is doing well. He may even be baptized in the future. He has
attended another church and may still be. I visited with him and he told me he
attends a church called “The House of the Risen Son”. I asked him about it and
it is a “biker church” that is open to all people. He joins with them for the
music and fellowship. I checked it out on the internet and it looks like a
mellow group, most bikes look like Honda Gold Wings. I was interested in their pulpit;
it was the front forks of a motorcycle complete with tire, handle bars and
headlight with a flat top for books or papers. I confess that I have never seen
that before. Jim likes music and was curious about our music because his church
has a band. I told him we were pretty reserved and had no band. He smiled and
afterwards said our music was different but he liked it. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Another Manitoba attraction is the Prairie Dog Central
Railroad which is on the North end of Winnipeg. It’ a tourist railroad and has
both steam and diesel power depending on the day you choose to ride the rails.
We went on a Saturday and arrived early enough to see the steam engine move
about and hook up to the passenger cars. The car we were in was 101 years old
and was comfortable enough for a one way ride of 45 minutes. We left Inkster,
MB and rode to Gross Isle, MB where we purchased lunch provided by the local towns’
folk for a reasonable fee. During the hour layover you could listen to a local
country singer, look and buy local handy work, go through a historical house or
go watch the train turn around for the return trip. You could also look the
engine over and climb up in the locomotive cab for a look see and visit with
the fireman. The steam locomotive was small enough that the fireman had to
shovel the coal by hand. At every crossing folks in their cars would wave and
honk their horn… it must be an instinctive thing to do.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Saturday after Labor Day we drove north through Selkirk
and on to Winnipeg Beach located on Lake Winnipeg. The place was pretty well
shut down in fact our car was the only one in a huge parking lot. The weather
was cloudy, windy and cool so no one was on the beach or in the water. We
walked around a bit had a burger then met an interesting woman who owned a
store in a very small mall next to the lake front. She grew up South of
Winnipeg and told us lots of local history. Winnipeg Beach was built by the CP
Railroad as a tourist destination in the late 1890’s. It had a wooden
rollercoaster, a movie theater, hotels, summer cottage rentals and a rail
station, etc. It was the place to go for a summer vacation or even a weekend
outing. Lake Winnipeg is 60 miles wide, 258 miles long and averages 39 feet
deep. It is the 11<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> largest fresh water lake in the world and freezes
over every winter encouraging lots of ice fishing and other winter activities
The Lake is used for recreation, supports a large fresh water fishing industry
and is used as a reservoir by Manitoba Hydro. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Let me explain Manitoba Hydro. When we first arrived in
Canada we heard people talking about their Hydro bills, in fact we heard it all
the time in the mission office because the missionary apartment rent and other
bills are paid from the mission office.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>In our way of thinking a hydro bill must be the water bill ergo hydro.
Not so kimosahbee, your hydro bill is your electric bill and Manitoba Hydro is
like Pacific Power and Light, Con Edison back east, Rocky Mtn. Power etc. Now
you know.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Summer here has been very dry this year and blessings from
that are lots of sunshine and very few mosquitoes. The negative side is the
soil here is mostly clay and as it dries out it settles causing house foundations
to crack and water mains to break. The city has had many water main breaks
causing work crews to be extra busy. We can tell when the main in our area has
broken and been repaired because the water in our apartment turns brown and
looks pretty bad especially in the toilet. It usually takes a day for it to
clear up. The city is working on our street replacing old pipes that will
hopefully keep us in clean water.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Fall has definitely arrived. We have enjoyed the month of
September which was mostly warm and sunny. The leaves have turned and it has
been beautiful to see the fall colors. Assiniboine Forest is just across the
street from the mission office and we have a great view of the hard wood trees
which have turned mostly yellow but there are some red colors, too. I did a
walkabout recently and discovered that some of that red color was due to Poison
Ivy which I knew grew here. It looks just like Poison Oak, you know, “leaves of
three let it be”. It grows along paths and roadways for sure, as well as throughout
the forest.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">With the long dry spell all the wildland fuels have dried
out and were just right for fires to start. Earlier this week a strong wind (30-40
MPH) came from the south and fanned some previous burns back to life. We
noticed a large smoke column coming from what we thought was Assiniboine Forest
near the office but after further investigation found the fire to be south of
our area burning in farm fields and islands of hardwood forest between the
fields. The Winnipeg Fire Dept. was stymied due to lack of access but managed
to get the blaze corralled by day’s end. The fire burned several hundred acres
with no homes lost. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The small town of Vita located 40 miles southeast of
Winnipeg did not fare so well. The same scenario developed there but several
homes were lost due to fires being pushed by strong winds. The local news team
was on hand and caught on film a car with several occupants trying to make
their escape. The car was headed away from the camera crossing a bridge that
was on fire. The weight of the car collapsed the burning bridge dropping the
car into a shallow creek. Fortunately the car was going slow and the drop was
only about six feet. The people in the car were rescued and were not hurt but
the car burned. The next day October 4<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> the area has nearly six
inches of snow. It was strange to see houses still smoldering with that much
snow on the ground.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Monday was my 64<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> birthday. Mom couldn’t find a
school coral group to sing the Beatles song “Will you still love me when I’m
64”. She did that a number of years ago and had the local SHHS coral group come
to my work office and sing. I remember it vividly; I was surrounded by high
school kids singing that song while I turned beet red and sweat profusely with
embarrassment. I did get the opportunity several years later to return the
favor. Cheryl Bricco helped set it up and had the same coral group go into Moms
room at SHHS were she was a substitute teacher and serenade her with the same
song.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mom and I did go out for birthday dinner at a place called
Montana’s with the Olsen’s who serve in the mission office with us. The Elders
said it was good food and if it’s your birthday you get to wear bull horns and
be serenaded by the servers. With a free dessert and bull horns I thought it
was quite the bargin. The food was good too, I had ribs. Yum.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">When we came out of the restaurant we saw a huge black
column of smoke about half a mile away. We thought maybe a scrap yard was
burning but it turned out to be a bio diesel plant that had exploded and we
just missed the fireball. Lots of people saw the fire ball so it hit the National
Canadian and USA news. If you happened to see it was about one mile east of our
apartment.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I had been mentioning fall and out of the blue winter hit
with cold temperatures, wind and snow. I was amazed because we went from 60 + degree
to 30 degrees overnight. It snowed all day on October 4<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> with
little accumulation here in Winnipeg but other outlying areas had six to eight
inches. Friday, October 5<span style="font-size: x-small;">th,</span> Mom and I were to go out to the town of
Anola and help a ward member get the last of his fire wood in. He called and
said we would delay the project until next week due to a generous early snow
fall. We were grateful because we weren’t anxious to work in snow and 20 to 30
MPH winds. I guess we are just wimps in our older age.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I discovered something the other day that was interesting
and decided to share. The province of Alberta has the largest supply of oil
outside of Saudi Arabia; however it is in the form of “oil sands” and looks
like tar. The particular mine that was giving the info said that they surface
mine with six large “shovels” and 37 extra large Cat mining dump trucks. Each
truck holds 345 tons of material which contains 190 barrels of oil or 3600
gallons of gasoline. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">On a given day 300,000 tons of oil sands are mined with
150,000 tons of waste produced. From the 150,000 tons of good material 150,000
barrels of oil are produced. It takes seven days from mining to fuel. Their
catch phrase is “one week from bank to tank”. This process produces 4 percent
of all Canada’s green house gasses.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Saturday 10/14/2012 was our 11<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> month
anniversary on our mission, only 7 months left. We occasionally get to teach
with the Elders and Sisters which is a lot of fun. Saturday was such an
occasion when we met David. David is Chinese and since Chinese names are too
hard to pronounce they take a North American name so it’s easier for us to deal
with. David is just learning English and is doing well but it took two hours
for him to ask questions so he was sure of what he had been taught. We didn’t
even get to the lesson, so the Sisters scheduled a new time to continue to
teach him.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mom and I went to The Forks to browse through a Christmas store.
It was very nice with lots of great stuff. However the highlight at The Forks
was the annual Zombie walk. We were unaware we were in for such a treat. We saw
a few of the critters and I even got a couple of photos as we were leaving. We
missed the event. Evidently it’s a big deal with perhaps many hundreds of
people participating in the city. We saw them driving cars and even a few on
the streets. The Zombie thing escapes me.eh?That’s all for now.</span></div>

Dad had a great 64th birthday. It started with the Assistants to the
President. They made him cards, bought him a play firetruck and made a short
video that was very cute. I provided lunch for the Elders and President,
mostly from Costco because the Sisters were going out for lunch to celebrate
Sister Christensen's birthday. Then we got home and Elder and Sister Olsen
took us to Montana's for dinner. Dad has been wanting to go there.
They are famous for ribs which the 3 of them had. The
waitors brought him horns and sang to him. All in all, I think he
had a good birthday. We finally got our absentee ballots today and we have
already voted. </div>

<br />
A hearty hello after a wonderful day in zone conference. We had a General
Authority and his wife: Elder and Sister Swick taught us and it was a
marvelous day. They send a special hello to President and Sister Heywood
who also served as Mission Presidents in Chile. I thought I might
highlight several inspiring stories that would interest you. When they
were called to serve in the Santiago Chile North Mission, they packed up their
4 children, Scotty being the oldest and mentally & physically challenged
and their 3 younger children, the youngest being 9. Upon arrival Sister
Swick wondered why there was a 10 foot fence around their home and why the
children could not go out of the yard without an escort. They were in the mission for 11/2 days and had just taken the previous
mission presidents to the airport when they received their first phone call. It went something like this. "President, this is Elder _____, I am
calling you from a phone booth (this was before cell phones), all I have on is
my companions overcoat because while we were in the Chapel 7 terrorists came in
with sub machine guns. They made me take off all my clothes, in front of
Seminary, they poured floor wax over them and set them on fire. The
Chapel is now on fire and is burning to the ground. What would you like
us to do? Sister Swick, said, "I can't do this, I don't speak the
language, my children are in danger, etc. etc. When her 9 year old,
Spencer spoke up, "Mom, don't worry Heavenly Father will help you do
it." They stayed, she and the children learned the language, they
learned to love the people but more importantly they learned that
we should not limit ourselves by what we think our capacity is
because Heavenly Father will expand us." Sister Swick
mentioned meeting a young sister missionary from the Midwest recently.
After she heard her bear her testimony she wanted to meet her and get to know
her better. She pulled a chair up at lunch and started to chat with
her. She found out that a few years previous, this young missionaries
mother asked her to go and spend the night with grandma because grandma was not
feeling good. She went. That night her home burned down with her
mother, father and 3 siblings inside, all perished. Sister Swick asked
her how she made it through such a traumatic experience. She answered I
was faced with a choice. I could choose fear and hatred or I could choose
to develop a deeper more abiding faith. I chose faith. Now she
serves as a missionary. Then as part of Elder Swick's presentation he
spoke of his first mission as a young elder. He was sent to the
Argentina/Bolivia, ? Mission (sorry, I missed writing some info down).
Some time while there, an Elder Arso (sp) told the Mission President, Richard
G. Scott that if he would send missionaries across the border into Bolivia that
3 cities and I can't spell them, would surely convert being pure
Lamanites. Then President Scott discussed this with President Spencer W.
Kimball. President and Sister Kimball went to Argentina and took a 4 day
jeep ride to this part of Bolivia. He dedicated the land for the
preaching of the Gospel. Then he called 4 missionaries to begin the work
there. One was Elder Swick, his job was to build a chapel. He and
his companion first had to go some distance and buy 2 horses and ship them back
by train. Then they began they their calling. The second elders job
was to improve life for animals. The third's was a medical calling and
water purification. The fourth is fuzzy in my memory but he, I think was
over 22 burros that brought all the materials in to build with. When the
chapel was finished it was Elder Gordon B. Hinckley that came to dedicate it
and yes, all 3 cities joined the Church and there are now 2 Stakes. There
was lots more to the training but I am at a loss to try and put it down on
paper. The end of the meeting was a 12 minute testimony meeting where the
elders were told to keep their testimonies under 2 minutes. Most, took
about 40 seconds. It was an incredible meeting and the Spirit
overwhelming. It was definite proof that a testimony can be borne in a
few seconds. That is exactly what the missionaries do when they are
teaching investigators and I think it is very effective. I know my heart
was moved. It seems apparent that much in the world and church has been
accelerated and we best make good use of our time granted us to help gather as
many people as are willing to embrace truth and have the opportunity to bless
families. Time is getting short. It was suggested that we use Preach
My Gospel for family home evening and all of our other studies. You might
all take that into consideration. </div>

some first hand pictures. I won't identify the elder as he might be

he went through. I wonder how the pioneers rid themselves of this plague.
When we toured the governors mansion at Lower Fort Garry, mention was made of
fighting these bugs and what a chore it was. Hence the saying, sleep

Lee. She is 87 years old and just found the Gospel. She is so
excited and ready. Her big worry was the baptism itself. We
were asked by the missionaries that were teaching her to take her to a
baptism. After that she was no longer afraid. She is very spry and
"with it." Her only limitation is her hearing, but even that
isn't a very big challenge. She found answers to questions that she has
had for over 50 years. Her husband has passed, she also has one
daughter who died 2 years ago . She still cries every day when she thinks
of her. Imagine her excitement when the Elders taught her about Eternal
families. She has two other daughters that are not interested at
this time but were supportive of their mother. There was a huge
attendance at her baptism and now she has a large Church family who all love
her and have welcomed her in. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Wanted to drop you a note and a picture of Samuel. He is investigating
the Church and what a precious spirit he has. He was originally from
Congo. He was kidnapped by rebels when he was 10. He was already a
Christian and knew he did not want to participate in the rebel army.
So he ran. Three days and three nights without water or food. He
somehow made it to Uganda, I admit missing some of his story due to my hearing
and his accent. He lived 12 years there and was then able to immigrate to
Canada. He prays daily for the welfare of his family still trapped in
Congo. He warns them not to go against the regime or they will be
killed. He hasn't seen his family but he must be in contact by cell phone
or internet--I am guessing. He is learning the Gospel and I said to him,
there might not be peace in the world but you will find peace in the Gospel of
Jesus Christ. He grabbed my hand and with tears in his eyes, said,
"Peace! Peace! Yes, Peace!" I am really learning to count my
blessings and am trying hard not to take freedom and other privileges for
granted. It was a blessing to meet him, though. If I were rich, I
would bring his family here to be with him. I am so blessed to be able to
see my family any time I want. He hasn't seen his since he was 10.
Have you ever wondered what you did in the premortal life to deserve to be born
in freedom & prosperity? We are so blessed. xoxoxo love you

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mom and I just returned from a road trip to Regina and
Saskatoon Saskatchewan. I might add that it's a long way from Winnipeg. Our new
mission president, President Thomas, invited us to the Saskatchewan Zone
Conference <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>to participate, to get to
know the missionaries on the other side of the mission, to deliver a new car
and sell a mission pickup truck.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We left on Monday July 16th and drove to Brandon MB where we
stopped for lunch. After a wonderful repast at Mc Donald's we tried to use the
"clicker" to unlock the car door but to our surprise nothing
happened. So here we are with no way to get into the car. I took the battery
out of said "clicker" and cleaned it hoping it would work. No luck.
Mom asked where the real key was and I had no idea. I spied a stereo shop
across the highway so over we go and replaced the battery in the remote. Once
again no luck, still locked out. Now we are becoming concerned and I'm thinking
a lock smith or equivalent (crow bar, big rock?) After a prayer we try once
more and the "real key" fell out of the bottom of the remote onto the
ground. It's a Dodge van and that's where the real key lives we just didn't
know. Small miracles happen.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Our drive to Regina was about five plus hours and we
specifically took the route through Regina so we could see the Regina Temple.
It was very beautiful but very small. It's in a nice neighborhood and easy to
find. The trip over was interesting since we had never been out of Winnipeg.
The landscape is pretty flat but not quite as flat as our previous mission
president had indicated. He said it was so flat that if you stood on a tuna
fish can you could see a train coming for two days. It was flat with some small
rolling hills and all farm land. We saw lots of grain elevators, canola fields
and some flax fields as well. The canola is bright yellow the flax was blue. We
also saw lots alphalfa and wheat. Aside from the farm crops there was not much
else to see. The divided highway was similar to a freeway but had no rest areas
like we would be used to in the states. We found one that was signed as a rest
area but it was a little park. The wash room facility was a two holer out
house, vault type. No running water, just the hand sanitzers like in a port-a-pot.
It seems to be that way in the provinces of SK, MB and ON. If you are in need
you have to keep your eyes peeled for gas stations along the way. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We arrived in Saskatoon and had a nice place to stay, at
least several steps up from our usual Motel Six or equivalent. The interesting
thing was that the Hells Angels were staying there too. We weren't too
concerned but we did share an elevator ride with half a dozen of them. They
were pleasant enough.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">My job at zone conference is to check the mission cars;
tires, cleanliness, damage etc. and to show a driving safety video or safety
message. It's necessary, some keep their cars tip top and others need
encouragement. So after two days of that I sold a mission pickup and we were
off to Winnipeg for another assignment. We drove back a different route and saw
more farm country and some neat old churches along the way. We spent Thursday
night at our apartment and Friday we loaded up some furniture items for an
apartment in Dryden Ontario. That's about 400 km east of Winnipeg. We drove a
mission pickup and pulled a trailer borrowed from the church facilities
maintenance guys. The truck is new but when you add the trailer and all the
stuff we hauled over we looked like the Beverly Hillbillies. I was Jethro and
Mom was Ellie May.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">About 40 km east of Winnipeg there is a sign announcing the
geographic center (east/west) of Canada.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>As we proceeded east we suddenly left farm land and transitioned into
forest. There are rolling hills with spruce and quaking aspen everywhere. Lots
of lakes too, almost at every corner once we hit Ontario. As we passed in to
Ontario we noticed more police on the road than we have seen since we have been
in Canada. The speed limit was 90 KPH on the two lane highway. It it's about a
5 hour trip stopping for lunch. I really enjoyed the drive, kind of similar to
driving from SH to Bend. Just a good time. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We arrived in Dryden, found the apartment that had been
vacant for 3 months. To our pleasant surprise the Elders had left it in good
shape. Mom had called ahead and asked for some help packing the queen sized bed
to the 3rd floor. Two Branch members came to help and the 3 of us fought a
queen sized up the stairs, at time I wondered who would win. The stupid
mattress was stubborn and would fold over and we were like a sandwich. Did I
mention it was 30 Celsius (86). That was the tough part the rest wasn't too
bad. We didn't finish up until 8:00 PM so we spent the night and slept well.
The next morning I drove us the Dryden airport to get a look at the water
bombers stationed there. Every entrance said go away but I persisted and
finally found an one that looked hopeful. I found the back door to the hanger
open and after a shout a nice young fellow came over to see what I wanted.
After a brief explanation of my work career he took us on a tour of two planes.
He spent quite a bit of time with us even letting me get into one of the
planes. In talking to him he mentioned he was an apprentice airplane mechanic .
The normal apprentice program is three years but he had to do only two years because
his high school grades were at 95 percent. He makes $23.00 per hour gets
overtime and will make $36.00 an hour when he becomes a full fledges mechanic. We
had a nice visit and headed back to Winnipeg. There were no Hells Angels at our
motel in Dryden.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We are always in hopes of seeing a moose or an elk but no
luck so far. A sad event a RCMP officer was answering a domestic disturbance
near Saskatoon SK and hit a moose on the highway; the officer died from the impact.
Moose are so tall that a car or pickup takes them out at the legs and the body
comes right into the windshield and you're a goner. They say that there are two
seasons in this part of Canada, winter or construction season. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Lots of road repairs here, it takes all summer
to try to fix all the winter damage beside trying to build new stuff. In front
of our apartment there is a three lane boulevard which had a few bad spots to
be repaired. The road crew dug out the bad spots and put small barriers in
front of each spot but put up no signs to warn of lane changes previous to the
work sight. So, while getting ready one morning we hear the screech of tires
and a crash. Looking out the window we see a car has definitely ran into the
barrier. Later the same day there was a three car rear ender at the same place.
With no warning and traveling at 70 KPH there is now way to escape with all
three lanes full of cars. We have found some things like that a bit different
than it would be at home. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">After out Dryden trip we had part of the week to get ready
to go to Dauphin MB. We again set out looking like the Beverly hillbillies with
mattresses, table, and apartment paraphernalia for a new apartment for new
Elders to become established in the small community of Dauphin. Dauphin is the
size of Sweet Home. This time it was just a long one day trip. The road to
Dauphine goes through Riding Mountain Provencal Park. It's a slow trek but
worth the drive. Again lots of spruce, aspen and lakes. There are real
identifiable ridge lines and some modest elevation, enough to make your ears
pop. It's called a boreal forest in this part of the world. All countries above
the 50th parallel have the same forest. Trees are not as tall and I believe
they have peat bogs and muskeg too. The park as well as everything in Canada is
dual labeled because both English and French are spoken here. So we saw some
interesting construction signs. Speaking of French I chose a major brand gas
station to fuel up at in Winnipeg. Once I started the process at the pump it
was all in French. I poked wrong buttons and finally had to go inside and have
the guy reset the pump so all I had to do was fill up the truck. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">While in Dauphin we did a little sightseeing. We found the
100 year old rail station and took a few minutes to talk to the lone employee
of the rail<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>museum, a young man ready to
start university this fall. He didn't even charge us the full price to enter, he
just asked for a donation. He had been hired for the summer and his boss gave
him two days training and left for a one month holiday. The kid said he has
figured the rest out on his own. Luckily he knew how to operate the model rail
road so we enjoyed watching for a few minutes. Next stop was a Ukrainian
Cathedral on main street. They are very impressive with the large domes which
can always be seen when you enter town. We also stumbled onto the RCMP
training<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>facility in Dauphin.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">On the way home we stopped in the small town of Onanole MB to
check out their very large elk statue and to get a RCMP officer off our tail.
While there we smelled a great little restaurant called Barnaby's Grille that
served racks of barbecued pork ribs. I had the ribs and Mom had a steak. Try as
I might I could not keep my hands and face clean. Mom kept pointing to the
dirty spots and as I wiped them I created more of a mess. I finally had to go
to the washroom to get cleaned up. Good meal though. After that it was on to
Winnipeg returning about 10:30 PM.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">That's been our schedule for the last several weeks. This
upcoming week is missionary transfers so we will be busy again. It surely makes
the time go by. In two weeks we will be halfway through our mission. Time is
flying by. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Love you all,</span><br />

<br />
We love you! How is everyone? It is still hot and muggy here but I love
it! We have been doing a lot of driving the past 2 weeks. We have
gone to Saskatoon, SK; Regina, SK (to look at the Temple); Brandon, MB; Dryden,
Ontario and yesterday to Dauphin, MB. We have seen amber waves of grain
galore! The wheat is being harvested now. The flax blooms in a
beautiful blue hue. Then there are miles of beautiful yellow canola
fields. The President took us to Saskatoon for zone conference. Dad
drove a car, I drove the mission van and the President went in his SUV.
While there dad sold the SK truck, delivered the car in exchange and then
counseled the elders and sisters on safe driving. The President booked us
in a really nice suite in the Holiday Inn. I said I felt rather guilty about
the plush accommodations. He said it was all he could get. There
was a big convention in town that had booked most rooms earlier. Oh well,
we suffered through it. We figured out what convention was in town when
the elevator doors opened to a crowd of friendly Hell's Angels. They were
polite and quite nice. We were gone 4 days, came home on Thursday and
then loaded the truck and trailer with furniture and supplies for the Dryden
senior couple. We arrived in Dryden about 2:00 p.m. and started unloading.
There was no elevator in the building so we had to pack everything up to the
3rd floor. I, we, were dripping sweat! Two brothers showed up from
the elder's quorum to help with the queen size bed. Dad still had to help
because one brother was physically unable to do it. We were pretty worn
out so we got a motel that night and did a little sight seeing and headed
home. Then this week we spent in transfer preparation. On Tuesday I
went outside to knock a few apples off the tree for a doe and fawn that
entertain us through our office window. Dad warned me not to because he
got stung by a hornet the week before when we were doing some yard work.
I didn't realize that the branch I started on had the hornet's nest
attached. I am sure the same guard dog hornet came out and stung my
ankle. It only hurt for about 10 minutes and then it started
itching. It has gotten worse every day. It looks like a sprained
ankle due to swelling but nope, it is just a puny sting. Not comparable
to Seth's dog bite but I thought you would love the picture. We have been
closing an apartment above us. I finally got it cleaned out except the
heavy stuff. The wonderful assistants came and helped us along with the
Olsen's. So the picture "like father, like son or like son, like
father"... that one is for guess who? Then the next day (Friday) we
loaded up another trailer and moved stuff to Dauphin. That area will open
with elders this week. I feel guilty sending them to this
apartment. No one had seen it ahead of time. Not too good.
Hope these elders are strong willed. They are going to need faith!
On the way to Dauphin, we had to go through Riding Mountain Provincial
Park. hey, the Canadian version of a mountain and real trees. It
was beautiful with several pristine lakes. We are back in Winnipeg
today. Next week the President is opening Swift Current. We are
hoping we don't have to go there. Maybe we can get some member help for
it is quite a distance. We figure we have driven 1,864 miles in the past
2 weeks. Dad went to help the assistants today and clean the bug laden
truck and took our London Elders to the Pioneer picnic. I stayed home ALL
day and deep cleaned. It has been several weeks so it needed it.
All in all we are doing well, excluding my sleep being disturbed by violent
itching. I am sure glad I haven't had poison oak, I don't think I
would live through it! I am attaching some pictures I hope you
like. And a very happy
birthday to our Natalie. You are turning 8- it's great to be 8.
Sure sorry we won't be there for your baptism but we love you! </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Hi
everyone, just thought I would let you know we are on an adventure. Our mission
president decided he wanted us to drive to Saskatoon for the Saskatchewan zone
conference. The Manitoba zone conference was last week. The president is new (three weeks)
and visited the SK missionaries for a get to know you. He decided to go
tracting with a set of Elders and didn't like the way the senior
companion drove, so he wants me to do the car inspections and
safety talk instead of the assistants who traditionally do the job over in
SK, I do them for the MB zone conference held in Winnipeg. It's
a long way from Winnipeg to Saskatoon, at least an 8 or 9 hour drive. About 900
km at between 100 and 110 KPH. Top speed equates to 68 MPH. We stopped and saw
the Regina Temple, very pretty but very small. Lots of farm ground to see.
Signs for moose, deer and elk crossings on the highway. No rest areas to speak
of and the few that exist are definitely not up to US standards. We will
to call you when we get home or on Sunday. We get home on Thursday night and on
friday go to Dryden Ontario (four hours east of Winnipeg) to set up an
apartment for a new senior couple. Usually there have been Elders in Dryden but
now a change. Dryden is about the size of Sweet Home with about 15 active
members in the Branch. Fortunately we are on the church's dime using church
vehicles and gas, other wise it would been very expensive for us. So, we have 2
days of vehicle inspections and I managed to sell a church pickup that need to
be sold to a man here in Saskatoon. Very fortunate otherwise we would have had
to drive it back to Winnipeg to sell. More to come later. </span></div>

Hi, we are doing great. Summer has been tolerable. Some days are
very muggy but we are not complaining about all of the beautiful
sunshine. So far the temperature has not exceeded 86 degrees. We
have been busy! The Elders tracted into 3 young men from the Congo:
Daniel, Christian and Consolation (that is what his name means in Swahili, I
cannot pronounce or remember his real name). They are all Christian and
loved Church. In their religion the young people cannot partake of the
Sacrament until they are 11 or 12. Dad explained that the age of
accountability is 8 and that came as a revelation to the prophet Joseph
Smith. We only picked them up and have nothing to do with teaching them,
wish we did as they are wonderful young men. They speak Swahili, French
and are learning English. They did very well for only being here since
May. They are looking for work which we pray they find so the government
doesn't send them back to the Congo. We did get to go with several sets
of Elders to teach families from San Salvador, one from Columbia and two
Natives. I just love going with the missionaries and to feel the great
Spirit they exude when they teach. <br />
<br />
All of the office staff pulled off the largest transfer yet. 13
missionaries. It went well due to the planning of the President's
assistants. What great training for them as they organize, plan and
work. Our beloved mission presidents went home a few days later.
Our new Mission President and wife are from Ketchikan, Alaska. They have
a family business of 3 hunting/fishing lodges. He is a bush pilot and
only loves to fly float planes. He has 20,000 hours experience.
Their children were left to run the business; they are sure to do
well. Here is some exciting news, you may already know. The
Mormon.org project is booming. It is fulfilling the prophecy that the
Gospel will go to everything nation, kindred, tongue and people.
Plus, because of Mitt Romneys campaign, Church headquarters has been flooded
with inquiries and truth seekers. For once they are coming to the source,
instead of listening to the anti-Mormons who write their version of what they
think our Church is about. The First Presidency used to take care of
the dignitaries that come to Temple Square. There are so many now that
they expanded to the Quorum of the Twelve but now they can't handle the
flood. There have been more inquiries in 2011-12 then the combined
inquiries from 1830-2011. See the prophecy in Isaiah 2. Wow, is
this wonderful or what? Oh, and this piece of info: The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the predominant faith in Alaska!!!<br />
<br />
We went to Selkirk on Church business several weeks ago. We stopped
for several hours on the way back at Lower Fort Garry. It was
originally built on the Forks right here in Winnipeg. The flood of 1826
destroyed the Fort. This was not good for the Hudson Bay company. So
they rebuilt the Fort 32 Kilometers from Winnipeg on higher ground? That
is a stretch, but there is an embankment you have to climb from the river that
Dad guessimates at 50 feet. I am attaching some pictures that I hope
you enjoy. This fort never saw a battle. They eventually made a
treaty between the Ojibway and Swampy Cree nations and the Crown.
Okay. One picture has a young college student pictured with a top
hat on. A quality top hat is made from beaver hides. They are
amazing to examine up close. The people who made them used chemicals
which included mercury. After a period of time they became
"mad" or crazy before dying. Hence came the term "mad
hatter." There is a picture of their pain killer. You might
like the recipe: Cayenne pepper, alchohol, & opium. Whew!
The 3rd floor of the Saleshop is called the furloft. There is a fur press
at one end. They pressed 90 pounds of furs and wrapped with a hide.
The tripmen then tied 2 bundles to themselves and packed them around the
portages and back to the York boats. These people were tough. Apparently
180 pounds of furs often out-weighed the tripmen. They invented a version
of our hand carts and they are a sturdy vehicle. The Governor's house was
also occupied by the man and his family that took care of all the ordering for
the Hudson Bay Company and the fort. He was referred to as the chief
factor. He actually recovered from TB here. It took great
planning because their order didn't come for 15 months. The grounds had a
blacksmith shop; the farm manager's house; a guest cottage; a small
infirmary; the men's house for the labourers and tradesmen. Some of
these tradesmen came from as far as Scotland. It was a fun diversion to
see this fort. There is so much history here. Fascinating. <br />
<br />
Bye for now. We love you. We hope all of you will put your profiles
on Mormon.org and then you can chat with anyone in the world who might like
questions about the Gospel answered. Who would have imagined that the
internet would play such a huge part in the final gathering? It is
very exciting to see. We have great hope that the Second Coming is closer
than most think. Sure hope so!<br />

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Another
greeting from Winnipeg. Mom and I are doing well and enjoying summer which has
arrived and it has been delightful. We have plenty of sunshine with a few
cloudy days and a little rain. I can tell I'm getting used to Canada because I
now blurt the current temperature in Celsius. Today was 28 and after several
days of 30 degrees. Just as a reminder 10 C is 50 F, 20 C is 68 F and 30 C is
86 F. The easy way is to double the Celsius and add 30 degrees, it's close
enough. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I have a
bunch of random things to tell you about in no particular order, so here we go.
I have been to Mc Donald's several times and have looked over the menu and
discovered that in Canada there is no dollar menu as there is in the US. The
cheapest thing to eat was $2.89 and that's before the tax. Mom and I were
at Home Depot so she could order blinds for a missionary apartment. I waited in
the car and noticed a Sysco semi truck and trailer parked near the entrance and
decided to take a picture to send to someone at forestry as a joke. I took said
picture and about 10 minutes later the driver came over and asked me if I needed
help. I told him I was fine but he asked me again and I began to get a bit nervous. After
dancing around a bit he said he was worried that I might have a complaint and
took the picture to send to his company. I told him why I took the picture and
that we were missionaries and meant him no harm. Then he told me that the week
before some 65 year old woman didn't like where his truck was parked and
threatened to break both his legs if he didn't move the truck. We visited a bit
and parted ways. On another visit to the same store we were at the help center
getting the aforementioned blinds when I noticed a sign behind the counter. It
had a list of all the employees at that store that spoke a language other than
English. Here is the list; Punjabi (Indian), Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Polish,
Togalog (Philippines), Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Bemba (off the coast of
Africa), Vancula? The color of their skin is as varied<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>as the languages. Any poster you see in
Canada showing people working has a mixture of men and women of all ethnic
backgrounds. Truly a melting pot.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Listening to the radio one day I learned that
there are 230 elementary schools in Winnipeg. The city is considering placing a
speed limit and accompanying signs near these schools. The cost would be one
million dollars and do to budget constraints it would take about five years. As
near as I can tell there is no slow down required (just the regular speed
limit) although many schools have crossing guards to help kids crossing the
street. Jr. High and High Schools were not considered because of the costs. The
average speed in town is either 50 KPH or about 31 MPH or 60 KPH or about 38
MPH. Higher speeds are allowed on some main routes and average between 70 and
80 KPH. or 45 to 50 MPH. That seems pretty slow but once you get used to it <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">it's OK. I
may have previously mentioned "photo cop" tickets. A missionary in
Regina got a ticket for $300.00 for running a red light and our just released
mission president got one on his last day here for $304.00 for going 70 K in a
50 K zone. If you appear in court the judge might reduce it a bit but you will
pay, no soft hearts here. Mom and I try to be very careful.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The Canadian
professional football season is under way. It runs from June through November. If
you are not familiar there are several differences. The field is 110 yards long
and much wider than a US field. They have 12 players on the field and it
appears the extra man is in the backfield on offense. Instead of 4 downs to
gain 10 yard they only get 3. So kicking the ball back and forth for field
position is a big part of the game. I am sure I have not caught all the nuances
of the game for you but I tried. The names are of course different; Hamilton
Tigre Cats, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, BC Lyons, Calgary Stampeders, Montreal
Allouetts etc. There are only eight teams so they play each other several times
per season before there playoffs begin. The ultimate for them is the Gray Cup
which is akin to our Super Bowl. An unrelated tidbit, there are 410 registered
taxi's in Winnipeg all driven by people from a wide variety of cultures. Duffy's
and Uni-City are the most prevalent. Both companies drive Toyota Prius which have
big strobe lights on top of their cabs with a large sign stating if the light
is flashing call 911. Must have frequent robberies eh?<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">About a week
ago the province of Saskatchewan had a huge thunder and lightning storm causing
power outages to several cities. The missionaries in Prince Albert were without
electricity for about 48 hours and with high summer temps they and other lost
food in the fridge or had to toss it for safety reasons. Even though they were
given a suggested list of food and other things to have on hand they didn't
have much so they got permission to go down to Regina and stay with the
missionaries and work there for a couple of days. With no power no purchases
could be made since all the cash registers operate on electricity. PA is about
35,000 people. A tornado touched down near Moose Jaw but fortunately it was in
farm country with no damage to homes or people. Saskatchewan has had multiple
violent storms this summer while in Winnipeg we have been by passed except for
a few minor thunder storms. We get the news from Minnesota (Fargo and St. Paul)
and they have severe thunder storm and tornado warnings quite often. A huge
storm dumped 9 inches of rain in about a 24 hour period causing epic flooding
and property destruction in a small town south of St. Paul.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">We have a
balcony garden which includes 3 tomatoes plants and 2 small pots with green
onions. The plants like the hot humid weather and are growing quite nicely.
Hopefully tomatoes by the first of August. We decided against corn, green beans
and squash because we couldn't get a roto-tiller to the third floor.<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">A couple of
names caught my eye, Elijah Bigwolf was a newly baptized fellow and Joanne
Smallbones is affiliated with police and signed a "photo cop" ticket
that one of our missionaries received a few years ago. I suspect both are
native. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">July 1st was
Canada Day. It is similar in importance to our July 4th celebration. The whole
city shut down, absolutely nothing open. Everyone goes on Holiday, the streets
and parking lots were empty. I have no idea where the people were. Too bad it
was on Sunday because there were some things that might have been fun to see.
The Canadian Air Force band played at Assiniboine Park and there was native
dancing and cultural events in the city. Also a big fireworks display near our
place but we live on the wrong side of the building to see it. It was great fun
to listen to it though. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Mom and I discovered ice cream is expensive in
Winnipeg. One day we walked to the park and decided to stop for a cone. It took
most of a $10.00 bill for two hard ice cream cones. So a few weeks later we
decided to try again but this time at Dairy Queen. Two medium dipped cones almost
eight bucks. After sticker shock we decided the ice cream was actually pretty
good, but we will have to pace ourselves eh?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">A few weeks
ago Mom and I went to a place called Fort Whyte Alive. It's a reclaimed clay
mine encompassing a square mile that was donated to the city 45 years ago.
Everything has been cleaned up, replanted and is open to the public for a
reasonable fee. It's a place you can spend the day looking at song birds,
ducks, geese and buffalo. Plenty of trails to hike and several indoor
attractions with a ground hog colony and lots of taxidermied critters; elk,
deer, cougar, eagles, badgers, wolverines etc. We had a great time being out in
the fresh air and sun.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Today we went back to "the forks".
We decided to take a half hour boat ride (not a three hour cruise) on the
Assiniboine and Red Rivers. The Assiniboine flows from the upper NW corner of
Saskatchewan so it drains a huge area of land and with all the snow melt and
thunder storms it is quite high and muddy. The boat we went on was a pontoon
affair with plenty of room and seemed very stable. You may remember how much I
like getting in the water. I knew exactly where my life jacket was. We could
see lots of the city from the river and it was fun to go under all the bridges.
One bridge had colored horizontal strips painted in different colors on the
bridge abutments to show the high water of various years. I was amazed how much
water a river could carry in big flood years. In 1998, if the river had been
just several inches higher, 60 percent of Winnipeg would have been flooded. It's
flat here. As our past Mission President said it's so flat here you can stand
on a tuna fish can and see a train coming for two days.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">

all the shops. After going up to a viewing area we<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>spent some time looking around. Mom went to
the wash room and I took a few pictures when a shop keeper asked if I was a
tourist. I said no, and then a short game of 20 questions to get to the fact
that we were missionaries serving in Winnipeg. Carol (her name) asked which
church and I told her, then she pulls out a Book of Mormon from under the
counter. Someone <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">gave it to
her but she has not read it yet. Carol seemed real confused about most things
religious so Mom spent some time trying to help her. Carol is looking but
afraid to make commitments to any church for fear of making a
"mistake". Mom told her if she would read, study and pray she could
know for herself. We left her with our phone number and how to get to
mormon.org. Hopefully she will check it out and read in the Book of Mormon. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">That's all
my tidbits for now. I love you all. Hope you are all enjoying your summer. Give
all the grandkids a hug and love from Grandma and Grandpa. Love Dad.</span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Well it's been a bit
since I have been in touch. Mom and I have been on our mission 6 months now,
only one year left. Time is going by fast. I have been quite busy for the most
part taking care of mission cars and missionary driver’s licenses. The weather
has been sunny and reasonably warm. We had a great thunder storm last night and
clouds and rain today, just like home. There is never any smog here. The
prairie is flat and the wind always blows so the smog is blown east and
dissipates. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Here in Manitoba and
over east in Ontario fire season has been active. It doesn't rain much and the
wind blows like crazy. So the combo is just right for wildfires. The province
of Manitoba has six Bombardier water bombers and Ontario has nine. They are the
scooper types that carry 1600 gallons of water. There are so many lakes in the
forested areas that the ability to scoop water is a quick way to get water on
the fire. I have observed in the news that the planes have been used numerous
times this season. The planes are hangered at the Winnipeg Airport which is
only a couple of miles from our apartment. I hope to go out and see if I can
get a tour before summer is over. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">We get local news from
Winnipeg and Minneapolis-St. Paul (twin cities) in Minnesota that include intense
weather and violent thunderstorms and tornado warnings. Fortunately all that
stuff stays well to the southeast of us by hundreds of miles so far. However there
was a tornado 40 miles west of Winnipeg two years ago that destroyed a small town
so it can happen here. The news broadcasts all the forest fire news complete
with video. It’s interesting that fire season here is in the spring and early
summer as compared to the west when it occupies summer through fall. Burn bans
are in force in parts of Manitoba and Ontario. Several small towns have been
threatened by forest fires but have been saved by moderating weather
conditions, firefighters and intense air attacks with helicopters. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<br /></div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Last weekend we went to
International Falls Minnesota. We have missionaries there and I had to go down
and take a Canadian car through US customs to get it licensed in Minnesota. The
boys totaled the car they had. The missionaries in that area actually live in
the USA but pass across the border almost daily<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>into Canada to the town of Fort Francis,
Ontario. Anyway the the Border patrol saw that the car the missionaries were
driving had MB plates and knew the boys lived in Minnesota which made them
unhappy. So the Border Patrol said get it licensed in Minnesota. It was quite a
process and took me several weeks of preparation to get all the paper work
correct before we traveled to I-Falls. It was a great trip because the scenery
was superb and it was nice to be in the USA if even for only 24 hours. Gas in
I-Falls was cheap by today’s standards, only $3.66 per gallon. Gas in Winnipeg
is about $1.20 per liter and in Kenora, Ontario we paid $1.34 per liter or about
$5.34 per gallon. That’s pretty expensive. Crossing through the port of entry
either way is a little nerve racking, it's like when a police car is following you
and you don't know if he is going to stop you or he is just going the same way.
Fortunately it went well although they ask a list of questions, look in the
back of the car and never smile while they talk to you. The only way you can
tell the difference between the US and Canadian customs folks is the Canadian
may say eh.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<br /></div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I- Falls Minnesota's
claim to fame is that it's the "ice box" of the US the coldest place
in the lower 48. We also stumbled onto Smokey Bear Park where there is a 26
foot tall Smokey. That's all the great stuff about I- Falls except they have
the Bronco Negurski museum. He was a famous college football player in
Minnesota and played pro football for the Chicago Bears in the 1930's.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">We go walking in Assiniboine
Park as often as we can. We walk between two and three miles depending on the
weather or our energy level for the day. One day we walked in a suburban forest
called the Assiniboine Forest. It has a number of paths and lots of trees and a
few ponds. In fact in late April someone accidently started a fire which burned
several acres in the forest. The city fire department put it out. The park has
other attractions in the Spring. All the Canadian Geese have returned and both
the geese and ducks have little ones. We see them floating around in the duck
pond in the park and they sure are cute.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<br /></div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Some big news was that a
wolf was trapped less than 10 miles NE of Winnipeg in Birds Hill Provincial
Park. I was surprised but it was in the local news. The wolf killed someone's
dog and was seen committing the deed. Local fish and wildlife trapped and
killed the critter. Once it hit the news it was familiar responses similar to
when Ron Henthorne killed the cougars near Holly. Lots of whining in the media.
A family we know from church lives about 60 miles East of Winnipeg in a town
called White Mouth. He is a farmer and when I asked about wolves he said oh
yeah I see them quite often on the farm. In fact he said a wolf will
occasionally pass through his yard. He has a trapper’s license and has to
either trap or shoot one once in a while.<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">
</span><span style="color: black; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The opportunity to work
in the mission office has some great benefits. The biggest one is to be in a
place where the Spirit can dwell. We senior missionaries all get along well and
we have the blessing of a morning spiritual thought and prayer to start the
day. Another blessing is to be in regular contact with the young missionaries
here in Winnipeg, we see them often and enjoy being with them. We talk by phone
to the other missionaries in the far reaches of the mission and enjoy them as
well. Some are so far away we will only meet them when they come to Winnipeg on
their way home after serving for two years. Mom and I are enjoying our service
here in Canada. I see why returned missionaries always say their mission was
the best one in the world. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Yesterday and today were Stake Conference.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was tremendous!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And that is putting it mildly.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">President
and Sister Paulson were the first speakers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>They are concluding their 3 years of service.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I admit to having no idea the extent of
service mission presidents give.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>President Paulson always says "eating and sleeping are highly
overrated."<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They both live by that,
sometimes not by choice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is hard to
fit every needful thing into a day.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Somehow they seem to get it all done. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He has a memory like a computer and remembers
small details, names and dates.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is
amazing to witness.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Lord knows who
to call, when and where. I have an even greater respect and appreciation for
Tim's parents who have served as Mission and Temple Presidents.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Talk about lives of service!!!!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What examples.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>President Paulson mentioned in his talk the
story of the " Jaguar and the Boy." I don't know if you have heard
this so I will paraphrase.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A man had
done well for himself financially so he rewarded himself by buying a
Jaguar.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As he was cruising around in his
beautiful new car he thought to slow down in one area with children present,
just in case one ran out in the street.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Just when he thought he was safe, a big thump.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He slammed on his brakes and got out to find
that a little boy had thrown a brick, visibly denting his new car.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Angry, he demanded to know why this little
boy had done such a thing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The little
boy, crying said, "because I couldn't get anyone else to stop!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He proceeded to show the man <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>his brother.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He had fallen out of his wheelchair and the little boy wasn't strong
enough to lift him back in by himself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The man helped the boy and watched as they walked off.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As he perused the damage to his car, he
left.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He never did have that dent
fixed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When asked why, he commented that
I always want to remember , "Don't go so fast in life that God has to
throw a brick at me to get my attention."<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Life is moving at a rapid pace and Satan can win if he keeps us busy
doing "things" even if they are good things, because we forget to
slow down and take care of what is "most" important.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">A few more highlights include:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Repentance is much more than being sorry, it
causes a change of heart that is permanent. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>2. The safest road to hell is the gradual
one, no rocks, no signs, it is the easy road. 3.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Make a change in your life and have the
courage to stand by it. 4.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We have to openly oppose evil. 5.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We
need to learn to unite the Gospel with the Church.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>6.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When
we judge others....we condemn ourselves.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>(Good thought).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The theme
Saturday night was from Matthew 6: 19-21. </span></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">7. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Family Home Evening needs a week's preparation
in these last days, especially if you have older children.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We need to find out for example, is anyone
having a big test that they could use help preparing for.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Or, is anyone going to a dance that they may
face certain temptations.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Then you
practice different scenarios, like what will you do if (this happens).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If they have practiced in advance they will
be able to react in a positive light.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>And in FHE, tell family history stories about your ancestors.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They will never remember the lessons you
prepared but they will remember their ancestors and have love and affection for
them.<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Sunday was a
broadcast from Salt Lake for all of Canada, its 47 Stakes and 6
districts.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The first speaker was born
and raised in Raymond, Canada.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His name
is Elder William Walker.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His entire talk
was on pointing your children to the Temple.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>His mother prayed every day without fail that everyone of her children
would grow up to marry in the Temple.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>When the children grew up they never wanted to disappoint their
mom.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In 1912, there were 7,000 members
in Canada.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>On July 7, 1913, Joseph F.
Smith broke ground in Cardston, Alberta for the temple.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He did not live to see its completion so
Heber J. Grant came to dedicate it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
Stake President was called as the first temple president.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He served as president for 25 years, while
continuing to serve as Stake President for 19 of those years!!!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wow!!!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>In 1955, there was a total 9 temples functioning in the world.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When the Winnipeg and Halifax temples are
complete there will be 9 temples in Canada.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>We were challenged to replace a little time spent on our recreational
activities with service to our ancestors in the temple.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Good idea.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He quoted President Hinckley at the Nauvoo Temple dedication as saying
when he looked at the little children:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>"Please, please, please never do anything to disqualify yourself
from going to the Temple."<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Carole M.
Stephens spoke next.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She focused on
strengthening our family.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She read </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">2 Chronicles 20 about the multitude that would
come against Jehoshaphat.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She compared
this story and the multitude of things that are thrown at us now.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Multitude is an understatement especially
through the media.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She concluded with
don't waste time on thinking, "I wish I would have.... start today to
strengthen your home. " </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Next
was Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His theme was service.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Why is it that the Lord must command us to
serve one another?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Service is not
something we endure in life but it is the fiber of an Eternal Life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In the Celestial Kingdom God will no longer
have to command us to serve, it will be our way of life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It will come naturally.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As you know the Quorum meets once a
week.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They each give an accounting of
what they did with the past 7 days.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He
said that President Monson, with all of his responsibilities still finds time
to minister unto the one.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Little things
but important acts of service<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">. He
refuted the premise<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>that a <span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-no-proof: yes;"><v:shapetype coordsize="21600,21600" filled="f" id="_x0000_t75" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" stroked="f">

</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">good person
and confines his religion to just himself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>This is contrary to everything the Savior taught by serving and loving everyone He came in contact with and taught His followers to do likewise.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We should give a life of service;<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Church service,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> m</span>issionary service (Elder Richard G. Scott
was his mission president in Argentina) and most importantly service in our own
home.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He told a story about a remarkable
woman of the Presbyterian Faith.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Her
name was Ophelia Compton (I have no idea if I spelled that correctly).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She was given an honorary doctor of Law
degree for her service to her children.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>You can look her up.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is an
amazing story.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> <span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Then our
concluding speaker was President Boyd K. Packer.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I fear his health is failing but his teaching
is still powerful.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He focused on being
proud to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He said it may not be easy to be a member but
it is easier than anything else, if you understand the patterns of life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Are we strange people?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Yes, compared to the standards of the
world.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We live the Word of Wisdom, we
don't smoke, drink,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>we eat healthy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We believe in being moral people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We do not believe in abusing the powers of
procreation but<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>waiting for marriage.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We don't swear in the sense of
profaning......Yes, different from the world.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Then he related the story of Joseph F. Smith who when asked by a mobster
holding a gun on him, "Are you a Mormon?"<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His answer, Yes sirree, died in the wool,
true blue through and through."<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>President Packer said that standing up for what he believed probably
saved his life and it will do the same for us if we are not ashamed of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At the end of his
talk he invoked an Apostolic blessing on Canadian Saints and it was quite
touching.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He even promised that they
would have no children missing from their families if they hold fast.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What a Promise!!!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We all know what is coming and soon but we
need not fear if we strengthen our families and hold tight to our covenants,
which is really a privilege.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> <span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">What a
weekend.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It concluded with the
missionary fireside in which our former FBI Agent and his wife give the
message.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This was #5, Enduring to the
End.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I will just share one story he told
of his father.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He received a call from
his mother telling him that his father had passed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He returned home to help make the
arrangements.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A younger sister from his
ward said, I need to share a story with you.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The night your father died, he came first to my home, home
teaching.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This was after a long day at
work.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I am living in the mission
presidents home while I attend BYU.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My
husband left me with 5 children to support and I am trying to get an education
so I can do that.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But, their term is up
and they are coming home, I don't have any place to live.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Brother Christensen left and then returned
with a fan, because the air conditioner had quit.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He told her not<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>worry about a place to live.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Two days later I received a phone call from,
___name?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He said I have been called to
be a mission president and you can live in our home for the 3 years free of
charge, if you just take care of the place for us.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She happily agreed but then asked him, how
did you know to call me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This brother
said.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I had a dream last night and Phil
Christensen appeared to me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He told me
your name, your dilemma, but said I don't know her number but you can get it by
calling the BYU switchboard.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>So I
did!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What a valiant home teacher.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He finished after he was dead!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No wonder Elder Christensen is thankful for
his father.<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
